In Vista 32-Ultimate the "Save As..." in my Media Player has recently become
greyed out for MP3's. I can save any other type of file (sound and video) but
not an MP3. This started happening a few days ago. I could save MP3's fine
before. I've Googled the issue and can't find a solution to the problem.
Anyone around here ever had this issue or have any suggestions?

btw..I've checked the MP3 codec and its installed fine.

I don't see this... ? I clicked on a MP3 link and opened an MP3 URL
directly in WMP11 Vista Ultimate, and both had Save As enabled... ? Does it
work for other sources (source web sites)? What changed on the system
previous to this happening?

Thanks for the reply. I'm sure it works fine for you since it did work fine
for me last week. I simply cannot save an MP3 file. The option to do so is
greyed out. As a last resort, I formatted the Vista partition and reinstalled
it last night. Once back to the desktop I let Windows provide the recommended
updates and then I tested to see if I could save an MP3 and I still could not
do so. This would lead me to think that something that is being "updated" by
Windows Update is causing the problem. The problem is driving me nuts. Saving
MP3's works fine in XP for me, but not under Vista anymore even after a
format and a reinstall. I don't understand.

How exactly could I reproduce this problem?
What's a URL I could use to show this problem?

Any desktop MP3 file or MP3 on my hard drive cannot be saved by Media Player
11. I can use a 3rd party program to save them, but not MP11. I can't imagine
that no one has ever encountered this problem before.

I'm not deliberately being obtuse, but I still cannot repro this - I go to
http://itstherub.com
, for example, go to the MP3 page, click on the Africa track, and it allows
me to Save As. Does it work if you give the URL directly to WMP... ?

There's no good reason for WMP to do this - did you install any custom MP3
file or download handler.... ? This doesn't make sense at this point to me,
which means I'm probably missing something.

The OP stated the problem occurs with MP3 files on his own PC not on the
Internet. I get the same symptom: Save As is grayed out. I don't know if
it is really a problem or not; I don't quite see what the value of saving a
file you already have using WMP. It could easily be done with Windows
Explorer.
