WMP 11 - Mp3's = Constant bit-rate?

Hi. I am finally ripping my cd collection and digitizing it. I am using
Windows Media Player 11 on Windows XP Home Edition. I have all the updates,
etc.

Does ripping in MP3's have a constant-bit rate? I swear I saw the option in
the options tab somewhere, but only the .wma files seem to have constant bit
rate or variable bit rate.

I know some ripping programs have the cbr or vbr choice for mp3's. What is
it in the wma 11 player? I can't find anything in the help topics for the
program or on the pages in the links from the help file. Maybe I missed
something, I doubt it though.

I usually use Easy CD-DA extractor for ripping mp3s, and you have a
choice between several cbr and vbr formats. An easy way to detect if
cbr or vbr was used is to use the free program GSpot which is used for
both audio and video. When you examine the audio with it for mp3
sound, you are told if it is cbr or vbr. I checked both vbr and cbr
mp3s made using Easy CD-DV Extractor, and GSpot accurately indicated
if they were cbr or vbr.

Next I went to WMP 11 on the Vista 64-bit home OS and ripped a mp3
from a CD input. You can choose the audio quality between 128 and 320
Kbps using a slider control. However there is no selection for vbr or
cbr. A ripped track was indicated to be cbr using GSpot. I have had no
experience with WMP 12 that comes with Windows 7. In general, if no
reference to vbr is made a mp3 track is assumed to be cbr, but this
may not always be the case.

As media player allows ripping only in wma you cannot rip in mp3. My
suggestion will be to rip in WMA as it takes half the space for the same
quality of mp3 file. And secondly use VBR so that bitrate will be adjusted as
required by the music. You will nowhere lose the quality.
