Discussion:
What exactly does "Apply Media Information Changes?" do?

I've tried to establish what the "Apply Media Information Changes" menu
item does but haven't had much success? Does it update MP3s with any
tag changes you've made?

I believe so, but I've bugged that with MS as it's not covered anywhere
in the UI or documentation. I actually haven't been able to get it
working on v11, and without an understanding of what it's supposed to
do, it's difficult to know what diagnostic information is appropriate to
provide.

It looks like it will overwrite your files based on the naming
convention set when you rip music.. I think it's suppose to download
the right info, Artist Album etc and create folders, move the files
over there and organize it that way.. but this is only in my dreams
cause I have yet to see it work..

A.M.I. plays a little too nicely with a number of other WMP processes and
can simply get infinitely stuck in the beta waiting for them to complete.
This should all work much better post-beta - the same Apply that tooks hours
to ... forever in the beta now takes minutes in current builds.

Thanks for the info Zach. By the way, what does A.M.I mean?

Can you also confirm exactly what the option does? (i.e. from the
horse's mouth as it were)

Apply Media Information - just shorthand. Everybody has their favorite
shorthand for this tool.

I don't have anything directly to do with that feature so couldn't speak to
its exact mechanics. I'm in about the same place you are as regards this
tool. AMI foregrounds all previously backgrounded metadata tasks, running
them at normal instead of background priority. So generally it's useless
for the patient, but then again I'd rather run AMI on Friday evening when
I'm about to disconnect a sync'd library or such. (I personally use an
external hard drive for my library, which means sync'ing that is of high
interest.)

Most of the above probably wasn't useful data. It writes the tags and
fetches metdata if you wanted that. =)

I'm pretty sure I know what Mike's is, and it's probably not printable
here (but involves short anglo saxon words ;-)

My Question is.. how do you get WMP 11 to realize that you've changed your
Media information (Artist, album, etc) using a 3rd party program. Ive
changed hundreds of my ID3 tags with another program and WMP 11 hasnt noticed
and still has things with the old info.

I tried 'AMI' but it didnt work. It did work when I told it to do the
detailed check with volume changes etc but that takes nearly an hour or two.

Hello Everyone!
Mike,

When I choose the Apply Media Information Changes option, the 'Percentage
complete' stays at 0, and the 'Status' states 'In progress' however it stays
like that and does nothing.

I am connected to the internet and media changes are applyed when I do it
manually. What is wrong? How do I correct this.

Please give me very simple instruction as I am very new to this.
Thank you

Progress is from 1 to N, where N represents the total number of items in
your library.

Try leaving it running overnight, if you need to, and see if that allows it
to finish up.

It just foregrounds background library tasks such as fetching album
information and etc.
